If chords could talk, they’d probably all be talking about Steve Cropper. As producer and house guitarist at Stax Records in Memphis and a member of the legendary Booker T. and the MGs, Cropper’s unmistakable rhythm work can be heard on countless R&B masterworks from Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On The) Dock of the Bay,” which he co-wrote, to Wilson Pickett’s “In The Midnight Hour” and Booker T’s “Green Onions.” From Stax, Cropper would go onto mastermind The Blues Brothers and lend his genius to recordings by the likes of John Lennon, Leon Russell, Levon Helm and even Frank Black. At age 84, Steve Cropper went quietly in November 2025. But his music will never stop striking a chord.
