Although often compared to his idol Roy Orbison, Raul Malo’s voice had a tone of its own. As the frontman and lead singer of The Mavericks, a band whose synthesis of country, rock and Zydeco was instantly recognizable, Malo’s tenor was as clear and supple as a trumpet – the ideal instrument to express joy and heartache in the same note. Larger than life and possessed of an infectious charisma, Malo left us far too young at age 60. Today, he’s mourned by a passionate following that includes fans and fellow musicians alike. But in the end, no one else will ever sing quite like Raul Malo.
