He didn’t actually write the song that defined a generation in the 1960s, but he came to own it. When Jesse Colin Young sang, “Come on people now, smile on your brother” in that angelic tenor, you pretty much had to believe in brotherhood. As a founding member of The Youngbloods, Jesse would go on to craft other generational touchstones, writing songs like “Darkness, Darkness” and “Ride The Wind” before launching a long and productive solo career. A longtime northern Californian, Jesse Colin Young is remembered as much for his love of the coastal wilderness as for the uplifting music it inspired.
