When Robert Plant says his prayers at night, we hope he thanks Terry Reid for his singing career. Reid, whose plaintive, haunting voice had captured the ear of Jimmy Page, politely declined the offer to front Page’s new band Led Zeppelin, recommending his young friend Plant for the gig instead. Though he would never scale the financial heights of his many famous admirers, Reid would go on to befriend and collaborate with dozens of the most iconic names in music from Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne to Gilberto Gill, Aretha Franklin and Dr. Dre. Admired as much for his songwriting and soulful guitar work as for his distinctive tenor, Terry Reid was known as a player who improved every song he touched. Some artists get rich making forgettable music. Terry Reid, on the other hand chose to make memorable music that enriched the world he left too soon.
