Of all the stars that rose in the 1960s, Sylvester Stone might have burned the brightest and hottest. A genius-level songwriter, arranger, bandleader, singer and multi-instrumentalist, Sly and his band The Family Stone emerged from northern California in 1968 to shake popular music to its roots. From their first single, “Everyday People” onward, this biracial 7-piece locomotive chugged out an infectious groove with horns and harmonies to underscore its message of inclusion and hope. And the world was hooked. Hits followed hits, and with each new record Sly revealed new dimensions until, famously, his perfectionism and bottomless appetite for substance abuse led him away from the spotlight, and ultimately, away from music for most of the next 50 years. Sly left us at age 82. Maybe everybody is a star, but nobody will ever be a star like Sly Stone.
