There are singers who wow you with technical flash and operatic range. Roberta Flack just stole your heart outright without even seeming to try. Her warm, mellow tone and captivating phrasing were one-of-a-kind, defying categories and transcending the rigid radio formats of the 70s and 80s. From the first note of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” to the last bars of “Killing Me Softly” she held our attention in the palm of her hands. Roberta’s heart failed her in February 2025, but her soul lives on in the hearts of music lovers everywhere.
