Some guitar players make the instrument moan, groan, scream or whine. Dickey Betts always made it sing. With lyrical lines that flowed like Bourbon whiskey, he stepped out from under the massive shadow of lead guitarist Duane Allman after the latter’s untimely death in 1971 to keep the Allman Brothers Band at the height of its powers. Bett’s’ contributions to the Allman songbook such as “Blue Sky,” “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” and, of course “Ramblin’ Man” remain timeless standards and his flawless technique has inspired countless imitators and air guitar superstars.
