How do you measure musical genius? Is it about creating new sounds? Does commercial success matter? Critical opinion? The admiration of your peers? Or does it have more to do with how many of your compositions become standards? Well, by any standard you can think of, Brian Wilson broke the scale. As composer and bandleader of The Beach Boys, he pioneered and then transcended the genre of Surf Rock, wrote and performed on more than two dozen Top 40 hits and earned the title “The Mozart of Pop.” Though plagued by mental illness and substance dependency for much of his life, he channeled positivity and attained harmonic perfection before he left us at age 82. Will we ever see the likes of Brian Wilson again? God only knows.
